Summer Gate, Sun Made of Gave

    Building

I’m thrilled to report that I’ll be a part of the forthcoming compilation “Summer Gate, Sun Made of Gave” on LuvSound. Featuring contributions from nascent luminaries OPN, Implex Grace, Mattin, Muninn, Rain-Cloud, Sleeps in Oysters, Inlets, Bryan Teoh, Effacer, Jeph Jerman, Cremaster, Ryan Francesconi, Jonathan Fisher, Nomad Palace, Osso Bucco, Tsukimono, He Can Jog, and others; this is one project I feel utterly unworthy to take part in. I really think this compilation is going to help set the new agenda for experimental electronic music in 2006. Just click a few of the artist links above, and you’ll immediately understand how immense this thing is going to be!

My contribution is entitled “Making Places”; an ambient work which considers both the sonic and emotive implications of a place. The piece utilizes primarily acoustic textures which, through heavy DSP, are transformed into often harsh drones. Momentary spatial gestures occur within the drones; i.e., microphone placements are effectively changed from moment to moment. I’m trying here to emulate the cubist painter’s technique whereby he affects a spatial concept via the presentation of a multitude of perspectives.

John McCraig of Panic Studios is currently mastering the compilation, which should be available online in May. I’ve heard from label-founder Erik Schoster that a limited edition CDR will be made available to people “in exchange for another gift they make for their local community, in whatever capacity that might be - organizing an event, writing a poem or an essay and droplifting it into a local library, etc etc”. What a tremendous thought! I wonder what I’ll do…

    NYC Moments.

Got to NYC yesterday -- stayed up all night with Dana and Tara. Snippets from our conversation: Jimmy Carter says yes. Green fingernails need you... The humpty dance rocks eggs. But few other things, mind you, like tubs of vasoline. Waking up in a pickle barrel house with leaves falling on the skylight over your head... then bonking your head on the curved roof. Russian Pig Olympics! Moments most missed: licking the back of a postage stamp right before mailing a letter to a friend. They were wrong - learning math did NOT matter! Check out Amadou and Miriam - cute blind couple from Mali, produced by Manu Chao There IS such a thing as cat scratch fever. Happypot cookies that you freeze, not bake. Vintage shopping in Chelsea is the perfect antidote to rainy Sunday afternoons in NYC. And a cuppa coffee at Push Cafe. :-) Feels good to be back in NYC.

I'm back in Philly, where the cherry trees are in full bloom and spring is at its lovely best. It's nice to reconnnect with old friends as we set up for Arts In Motion's show tonight at the Trinity Center -- a mix of classical fusion with electronic composition guided by 3-D synchronous music visualization projections across the hall. Then off to Fluid for late night electro dancing @ Sex Dwarf! http://artsinmotion.org/ http://www.fluidnightclub.com/

Show Announcement: Diego Rivera Gallery Show by Denise Parsons, Deer Fang and Alfonso Aguirre

Tags: Events, commonsoverlap @ 10:38 am

Opening: Tuesday May 2, 2006, 5 - 7 pm (artists talk at 12pm) Diego Rivera Gallery, San Francisco Art Institute, 800 Chestnut Street, SF, CA 94133 Show on View: May 1 - 6, 2006 Gallery Times: Monday - Saturday 8am - 8pm From May 1, 2006, to May 6, 2006, the San Francisco Art Institute is presenting works by Denise Parsons, Deer Fang and Alfonso Aguirre in the historical Diego Rivera Gallery.

http://www.deerfang.org, http://www.deniseparsons.com, http://www.alfonsoaguirre.com, http://www.sfai.edu 415.771.7020 Free and Open to the Public Free Wine and Snacks

“I Want to Feel Clean”, a video work by Denise Parsons, compiles clips of footage of her in her own bathtub. Thoughts of baptism and confession come to mind as Parsons reveals a wide range of emotions while letting us look in on her intimate and ongoing struggle to cast off and renew. Artist Deer Fang debuts “Cannibal Cafe,” a live video production using stories adopted from the news. This thriller to be shot during the two hour reception has several roles cast for the production, but also utilizes the participants of the show for the film. Fang uses video as a form to initiate a temporary collective moment, and uses narratives drawn from culture reproduction such as the news and books. Also on view will be the work of Alfonso Aguirre.
