Walter Murch on the alchemy of sound and image

Tags: All, commons, featuregordonosse @ 10:26 pm
an essay on the art of combining sound and image from a master of applying sound to film, walter murchSo we all begin as hearing beings — our four and a half month baptism in a sea of sound must have a profound and everlasting effect on us — but from the moment of birth onward, hearing seems to recede into the background of our consciousness and function more as an accompaniment to what we see. R.I.P. Kon Ichikawa only recently caught one of his films (The Burmese Harp), but his reputation is justifiably legendary. He made 88 movies over 60 years, and his last film was released in 2006, when he was 91. I look forward to seeing more of his work....

    Meek FM Typographic Synthesizer

Desription: Meek FM is an interpretation of type as sound. Using new software and the M.E.E.K. typographic synthesizer, the musician/designer develops sounds and typographic visuals in parallel. Meek FM will be premiering as an interactive installation at the Typo2007. The Meek FM team will also perform live at the Festival event.

    SPECTRUM featuring SONIC BOOM

“Sonic Boom” is the alias of Pete Kember, best known as the singer/guitarist in the legendary hypno-drone unit Spacemen 3. In 1990 he issued his lone solo LP, Spectrum; after the 1991 swan song Recurring, Sonic recycled the Spectrum title as the name of his new band, which debuted with the LP Soul Kiss (Glide Divine). Sonic Boom was also the driving force behind the Experimental Audio Research project, a loose configuration of musicians which included My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields. After the break-up of Spacemen 3, Sonic formed Spectrum with guitarist Richard Formby and bassist Mike Stout, along with contributions from Pat Fish (a.k.a. the Jazz Butcher).

another SHIVERLAND review, from the fantastic Australian electronic music magazine Cyclic Defrost!
“There is a continual development of ideas and sonorities within each piece and the relatively short track lengths for this type of music assist Sublamp in keeping things sharp and focused. So, while the overall drone-like aesthetic may initially have you thinking this could just be background noise, it is difficult to disengage and treat the music as merely a wash, the details continually drag you back to attention.”
