Symbiosis on overlap – Episode 19 – Piotr Kurek
30 Jul 2009, 4:07am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

This week’s mix comes to us courtesy of Piotr Kurek, a Warsaw-based Polish composer and musician born in 1978 (same year as me!). I heard his new album, Lectures on Cronica and had to ask him to do a mix for Symbiosis.

Piotr studied classical piano and played drums but is most known from his activity in dance theatre and electronic music.

“Lectures” was initially composed in 2007 for a live performance in Warsaw as part of a Cornelius Cardew music festival. It was part of the series of events “Zakrzywienia Igły”, organized by Michał Libera.

The original idea was to perform Cardew’s pieces. But this later evolved towards an improvisation based on sounds appropriated from various Cardew recordings, complemented by additional instruments.

With the help from Walter Cardew, the composer’s son, Kurek was also able to use unreleased recordings from lectures, performances and rehearsals conducted by Cardew, and recorded for private use. The release on Cronica presents a further development of the pieces composed for the live performance, inspired by Cornelius Cardew and his lectures.

Recap: Max/MSP/Jitter/Live Salon – July 22nd, 02009
24 Jul 2009, 8:32pm +0000 by vladspears

July 22nd’s Overlap.org Max/MSP/Live/Jitter Salon was a roaring success.  Thanks to everyone who supports and participates in our active community.  We’re all Overlap, and it couldn’t happen without each and every one of us.

Overlap Max/Live Salon 02009 07 22

The Gray Area Foundation for the Arts proved to be a wonderful place for a meeting of this size.  We had 60+ attendees in their new space: sleek, modern and perfectly suited for a group of people focused on the cutting edge of technology and creation. Gray Area’s mission is “to support and facilitate the creation of challenging and contemporary artwork focusing on new work and new ideas,” which fits hand-in-hand with our own community.

Matt Ridenour (aka VJ Mattbot) started us off with a presentation on his new Max external: [mattbot.euclid].  Matt’s object spits out strings of on/off states for generating rhythmic sequences.  State spacing across a measure is determined by the Euclidean algorithm.  Matt demonstrated on-the-fly, algorithmic creation of oontz using only the [mattbot.euclid] package driving single hits in Ableton Live.  Feet were tapping, brains were rocking and we had a spontaneous moment of Max-enabled dance improv as the audience all wobbled together in their seats.
http://projects.mattbot.net/

Peter Nyboer of Livid Instruments showed off the excellent new Ohm64 controller after giving us a virtual tour of the Livid Instruments compound.  I could easily live in that space!  Peter walked us through various aspects of the software he created for the Ohm64, all in Max/MSP/Jitter, and freely downloadable.  His OhmSound FM synthesis patch created some seriously smooth and musical sonics, built to take full advantage of the deep, real-time control possibilities of the Ohm64’s multitude of buttons, knobs and sliders.

http://www.lividindustry.com/culture/?tag=ohm64sw

Michael Zbyszynski strolled us through the Wonderland known as the CNMAT Max/MSP/Jitter Depot.  This sprawling collection of Max patches is a perfect and growing example of the rabbit-hole we’ve all gone down: additive and resononant synthesis with SDIF, Open Sound Control, computer assisted composition and the all-important morphing.  An extensive question and answer session generated even more sound for thought and wrapped the Salon in the best way possible with everyone ready for more.

Surprising development of the evening: the lemon-chocolate drizzle cookies were finished off well before the decadent double chocolate chips, and the almond milk beat out the vanilla soy *and* the whole milk for most in demand.

Check out the Overlap Flickr set from the Salon, you’re probably in it:

Thanks and big sonic booms to Noah Thorp and BArCMuT (Bay Area Computer Music Technology Meetup group) for joining forces with us on this Salon, to GAFFTA (Gray Area Foundation for the Arts) for providing the incredible space, to Matt Ridenour, Peter Nyboer, Michael Zbyszynski for their terrific presentations and again to everyone attending and involved.

segue – into the fall – slow flow rec
17 Jul 2009, 11:08am +0000 by tannermenard

segue is Jordan Sauer from Vancouver, Canada, currently residing in Washington D.C.. His sound is a patchwork of textures and tones with a focus on the interplay of timbre. These sounds are created through the blending of various instruments (12-string acoustic and electric guitar, piano, violin, melodica, various percussive drums and instruments, didgeridoo, childrens toys), incidental found sounds and field recordings. Being a lover of all music, his approach to music/sound composition is constantly evolving.

jordon sauer (aka segue) has become a great friend over the past months. i have been enjoying his album ‘into the fall’ for some time. in my opinion jordan has a really unique voice that combines some of the best aspects of ambient music from glitch to shamanic sound healing. most of his music is composed from manipulations of an extensive collection of live instruments and environmental recordings. in addition to being a talented composer he is also a gentle and poetic guy. i have been lucky to get to know both he and his music. jordan writes of his album ‘into the fall’. make sure to pick up a copy through slow flow rec.

all music is recorded and produced by Jordan Sauer using field recordings, acoustic guitars, violin, piano, glockenspiel, melodica, assorted percussion and sine waves via laptop.

‘into the fall’ was recorded during a transitional period in my life when many things began to change all at once. it was also recorded during the spring-autumn season of 2008, and so the emotional trajectory of the album coincided well with the changes in the physical world around me.

for me, music is a form of meditation, of reflection on what was and will be.

“I wear my shadows where they’re harder to see, but they follow me everywhere. I guess that should tell me I’m traveling toward light.”
- Bruce Cockburn

REVIEW BELOW

Jordan Sauer’s new Slow Flow album ‘Into The Fall’ released under his moniker ‘Segue’ is another example of the trendsetting curatorial choices of label owner Ryo Nakata who consistently releases the most compelling new voices in the ambient genre. ‘Into the Fall’ has been on my playlist for a number of months and served almost as a sound track for a whole mini-period of my life in New Orleans. Sauer’s organic synthesis of multiple styles and aesthetics forms the basis, in my opinion, of powerful album that suggests a more diverse approach to the genre.

Until yesterday when I set my intentions on reviewing this album that I have lived with for so many months, I had failed to listen to it with a good pair of headphones. Doing so revealed a highly sophisticated layer of detail that I never appreciated in all the months that it was used as a meditation tool or as a way to tune my environment. In particular I realized, through the use of headphones, Jordan’s masterful use of panning. There is a density of layer in these tracks that I find uncommon in much of the music that I have been drawn to in the past few years.

Tho somehow similar in aesthetic to the music of Celer, the similarity is perhaps in the pacing of meta-events, but unlike Celer who’s music acts on the mind through the reduction of material, ‘Into the Fall’ brings the listener into the sonic otherworlds through complex layering of minimal elements. If I had to draw comparisons I would say that Sauer’s new album combines the best of old school Steve Roach with the vibe and pacing of Celer while welcoming the sonic vocabulary of a whole range of glitch and noise composers. The aggregate of these comparisons is something totally original, a unique voice that will likely surprise us with his ability to continue to generate some of the most fresh sounds on the net.

Tho I suggest listening to the album once or twice with headphones, I also really recommend that you let this album guide your meditations or dreams. There is a shamanic quality to this work that is wonderfully nostalgic of the early pioneers of the genre. Burn a bit of sage and let the room clear, light a candle and let the music take you to your inner worlds to the inner places that Jordan Sauer aka Segue has laid out for all of us. ‘Into the Fall’ is a gateway, at least for me, into a sacred place, my inner alter, my higher self.
