Ambitious emotive music to sink your teeth and ears into, Asa’s “Catch You” and KOAN sound’s remix see’s two tunes combine haunting piano and vocals with deep subs and rolling beats. The originals Spacious melancholy resonance will leave you wanting more and this comes in the form of the remix which delivers a darker more dancefloor oriented edge. Complex arrangement of layered percussion and slick soundscaping give the music a timeless quality.

Weekend of Overlap in San Francisco Saturday, September 26
24 Sep 2009, 5:08pm +0000 by rejon

Come find us at the big swissnex event this weekend that is FREE at San Francisco Art Institute! Barry had a great post about the event on Saturday that features Overlap’s own, Christopher Willits doing a live set amongst others including: Marcus Maeder, Bernd Schurer, Thomas Peter and Jasch, and the tape works of the ICST’s German Toro-Perez, Daniel Bisig, Philippe Kocher and Martin Neukom, these three evening also bring a great roaster of West Coast performers together, including Steve Roden, Mem1, Kadet Kuhne, Loren Chasse, and Seth (Sutekh).

Come and find us! I look like this, but with a pre-mission beard:

We will have some stickers and other things to get you into Overlap! Find me near Christopher and more than likely that Barryster (like Barista).

After the SWISSNEX + SFAI gig, several of us will roll over to check out Tim Kiefer’s event, The Night Kitchen featuring amazing SJ SLUGO and DUB U, RIPLEY & RICO PREDICAT from Bay Area! Its a night of Juke House Music.

Then, come to Swissnex the coming Tuesday, September 29 at Swissnex office to participate in more electronic music goodness from 1 to 5 PM at a workshop to “discuss research and tools by the ICST, in domains such as ambisonics (Ambisonics externals for Max MSP and others) and Interactive Swarm Spaces while also broaching on historic perspectives about electronic music in Switzerland and beyond.”

"Flow Space", an installation applying research in Interactive Swarm Spaces, by Daniel Bisig, Martin Neukom and Jasch, of ICST Zurich

Hello all,

swissnex San Francisco with the support of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and various key partners, chief among which the good folks at VOLUME, are proud to present a very rare West Coast appearance by the Zurich-based label and electronic sound arts platform domizil, along with their research partners at the ICST Zurich (the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technologies, part of the Zurich University for the Arts).

******************************************************

swissnex and VOLUME have put together three densely packed evenings of performances, taking place at the San Francisco Art Institute for two nights in a row this coming weekend, and an L.A. date next week at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions).

In addition to presenting domizil performers Marcus Maeder, Bernd Schurer, Thomas Peter and Jasch, and the tape works of the ICST’s German Toro-Perez, Daniel Bisig, Philippe Kocher and Martin Neukom, these three evening also bring a great roaster of West Coast performers together, including Steve Roden, Mem1, Kadet Kuhne, Loren Chasse, Sutekh, and Overlap’s own Christopher Willits. Best of all: these shows are all FOR FREE

Our full program (check back for updates!) is available here:

http://swissnexsanfrancisco.org/activities/events/domizilandICSTZurichTour

Read more about the events at:

SFAI website

LACE website

VOLUME website

*************************************************************

swissnex is also planning a series of academic presentations and workshops around the work done at the ICST, in which domizil fully participates (in fact, the label also releases quite a bit of recorded research items from ICST – all available on CD or for free downloads under a Creative Commons license on the domizil website):

- one such session will take place at SFAI next Monday, September 28, at 8pm, and is open to sound students and researchers at SFAI and at all other institutes in the Bay Area. It’s free as well, please join if you can!

- swissnex is then organizing one sessions in its own space at 730 Montgomery Street in downtown SF, on Tuesday, September 29. This session (1pm to 5pm) is a great opportunity to get together and to discuss research and tools by the ICST, in domains such as ambisonics (Ambisonics externals for Max MSP and others) and Interactive Swarm Spaces while also broaching on historic perspectives about electronic music in Switzerland and beyond.

TO SIGN UP FOR THIS ONE, PLEASE SIMPLY EMAIL SWISSNEX (luc.meier@swissnexsanfrancisco.org) TO SAVE YOUR SEAT. We aim at getting a good, focused crowd with a minimum of knowledge in the topics at hand for this one, and participants will also get free entrance to the domizil “vecherinka” party event we will be holding the night of that day (regular admission price is $7.00). Hope to see you here!!

No Worries Mate! Post-Melbourne Rejon Photos and Overlap Salon Melbourne Slides
18 Sep 2009, 4:59pm +0000 by rejon

Over at my blog, I posted up the slides and a quick recap of my travels to Melbourne. Of course, most notable for this blog is the kick-off of the Overlap Salon Melbourne.

Melbourne Vision Forum Laoban and Overlap Melbourne Salon

A big thanks to Simon Hampson for setting up the event, and always doing what he does, which is symbiosis great! He set the event at the fabulous Loop Bar in downtown Melbourne. After about 10 people showed up, Simon started off by discussing what Overlap is, the evolution of Symbiosis and how he wants to see Overlap Melbourne move with the Salon and eventually doing Listen/Vision events in the future.

Then, I did my presentation thing (you can see my slides here), talked about my background, Fabricatorz, Vision Forum and the Laoban Speaker Workshop. I also updated the Overlap slidedeck, so that others in Overlap can use it to build future presentations.

Melbourne Vision Forum Laoban and Overlap Melbourne Salon

Josh Batty gave my favorite presentation of the night by showing off his wonderful max patches, and talking in general about his direction as an artist, and how he hopes to grow the scene in Melbourne through the Overlap Salon Melbourne (You can see my photos of him speaking here).

We ended the night after some constructive discussion, a few pints, and then onto eating the most amazing noodle soup I’ve ever had at a nearby venue.

Hats off once more to Simon and Josh for great event. I look forward to seeing how the Overlap Salon Melbourne grows. If you want to start an Overlap Salon in your city, start contributing to Overlap.org, drop us a line, and lets overlap.

Symbiosis on overlap – Episode 26 – Phaeleh
15 Sep 2009, 2:47pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Phaeleh (pronounced “fella”) hits us with an urgent, attention grabbing, mix this week. His distinct sound fuses the dark and heavy sounds of Dubstep and Drum and Bass with the melodies and soundscapes of Electronica, all sealed together with the subtle textures of acousmatic music. But he doesn’t want you to think about that whilst you dance.. This mix is from the heart and was recorded after a long night out, straight to disk!

Phaeleh’s diverse range of influences gives him an equally diverse musical output which can range from disturbing bass lines and heavy Dubstep/Jungle beats, perfect for the rave, to the more soulful, restrained tracks incorporating a variety of sound sources and vocal styles.

In 2008 he started Urban Scrumping Records and continues to gig regularly across the UK and Europe…
