swissnex and sustainability in business.

Pick an R, any R..

The Future of Business: How to Innovate with a Sustainability Strategy

As the fall season for events picks up speed be sure to join swissnex for some serious discussion about sustaining business and being sustainable in an economy where the role of nations takes a backseat to business. It should be an exciting event, as this shift in thinking pervades our sense of well-being in uncertain times.

The event is Monday 09 November at 6pm, free and open to the public with RSVP.

And this Friday, don’t forget that Overlap’s own Salon MC, Barry Threw, will be giving a presentation on his work with interactive music systems.

Baroque Dreams – Innovation in Musical Instruments at Swissnex

K-Bow

On October 30th I will be giving a presentation on Innovation in Musical Instruments, at swissnex San Francisco, the Swiss nexus for science, education, art and innovation in the Bay Area. I’ll be describing our initiatives at the BEAM Foundation; building tools to achieve our goal of sparking a new Western classical music movement based on the technologies and aesthetics of the 21st century. I plan to cover the role of technology in inspiring new art, how some current issues facing live electronic music performance can be overcome by new musical instruments, and some ways that we can ensure electronic pieces are playable for years to come.

This event is also free and open to the public with RSVP.

See you at swissnex!

Symbiosis on Overlap – Episode 31 – James Wyness
, 5:00am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Scottish artist James Wyness joins us with some of his sublime location based sound this week. He tells us:

“In the podcast I set out to give an illustrated account of one of my two long term and large scale projects – how I develop and exploit my digital sound archive of field recordings from the Scottish Borders and Northumberland – how key sounds are used in different musicial and sonic art contexts. I also play excerpts which refer to the archive’s involvement with the region’s rich and varied human and natural history.

2

So right now I’m working on two large scale projects. On the sound art front, I’m constantly adding to and developing my localised sound archive. Over the summer I spent some time recording in the hills and down on the coast. When the storms arrive I’ll get back to the sea cliffs to capture the ambience of some large seas caves. That should complete the picture. I’ve begun work on the new material for a CD release sometime before the end of 2009.

5

This month I’m starting rehearsals with some great players to develop a recording project wth some new compositions and extended improvisations on my orchestra of hand made microtonal instruments and electronics: working title, the concrete zen orchestra. I’ll be blogging scores, sounds and photographs as things unfold.

1

On top of all that, in December 2009 and February 2010 I’ll be at IMEB’s Circé studio in Bourges working on a new commission. I’m hoping to have a fouter around with their collection of analogue synths. Finally learning some basic coding to create my own blog, learning some design skills and working on a series of articles on Nature Writing and Sound.” – James Wyness, 2009

Next week: Orien brings the dubstep beats back to the fray! This London producer is about to unleash some seriously crazy beats in 2010 on labels such as Dub Police and Poizend Audio. Don’t miss it..

Drop me a line if you have got an artist you want to see featured or if you want to submit something to Symbiosis.

What is the future of radio?
27 Oct 2009, 7:11pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

I have been thinking about the future of radio a lot lately. Now that we have podcasting, music recommendation services like Last.FM & Pandora, and some great music sites online, it begs the question – What Is The Future Of Radio?

Digital radio recently launched in Australia which brings its own set of questions and has distinct implications for those stations who don’t have large cash reserves.

Old school radio

I have been involved with radio in one form or another since 1994. It was that fateful year that I volunteered at 3PBS and found my second home! In 2002 I started Symbiosis on Triple R which was a weekly show focusing on experimental sound textures and rhythms.

Cut to 2009 and I have joined the great crew behind Overlap to drive this wonderful vision of artist community online.

So cut to today. I saw an article in The Age:

Crowd-sourced radio show ditches the DJ

It seems one of our radio networks, Ausstereo, who own a number of commercial stations around Australia, have decided to throw the musical choices out to you, the audience. On face value this is an excellent proposition but in commercial hands we know that the choices will be limited. That doesn’t kill the idea of course but it is something to be aware of.

So.. what do you think the future of radio is? I would love to hear your comments..

Overlap Salon – Dia de los Maxos
, 11:11am +0000 by vladspears

For this second collaborative Salon event in Overlap’s ongoing team-up with the Bay Area Computer Music Technology group, we’re returning to the San Francisco digs of host extraordinaire Gray Area Foundation for the Arts.

When – 28 October, 02009, 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Where – GAFFTA @ 55 Taylor Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
Admission – FREE, please RSVP to connect@overlap.org

It’s a performance oriented evening for a season of skeletons, ghosts and spooky sounds. We’ve lined up music and technology presentations by three edge-walking artists using modern controllers, Ableton Live and Max/MSP/Jitter from Cycling ‘74.

Jef Stott
overlapsalon_jefstott

Jef Stott is a producer/composer of tribal dub, ambient electronica and Eastern breaks on Six Degrees, Universal, EMI, Hearts of Space and others. With Mohammed Mohanna he’s developed the extensive and mesmerizing Subtle Body project, an interactive biofeedback musical system utilizing Max/MSP/Jitter and Live.

Edison
overlapsalon_edison

Edison is a backbone member of the Monome community. Widely recognized with his DIY Monome in a yellow lunchbox, Edison’s musical output combines elements of hip-hop, glitch and breakbeat to create a sound entirely his own. In addition to his Monome, Edison’s toolkit includes his custom Love Box, Nintendo DS, Where’s The Party At? 8-bit sampler kit, Max/MSP and Live.

Preshish Moments
overlapsalon_preshish

Preshish Moments is a beatwrecker who developed his performance system from the ground up. Using a large, DIY wooden controller driving Shredder, the loop-mangling software he created and continuously refines in Max/MSP, Preshish Moments takes seemingly nice rhythms and turns them into something entirely otherwise. Hang on to your beats.

There will be a variety of milks and a plethora of cookies, as is now tradition at these collaborative events.

Join us for a night of modern sound and vision! Sign up on the Facebook event, BArCMuT’s Meetup page, or RSVP to connect@overlap.org

About the Salon:
The Overlap Salon is a regular meetup devoted to sharing code, ideas and projects built with the media toolkit Max/MSP/Jitter from Cycling ‘74 and Ableton’s electronic music performance application, Live. Our salons are a mix of performances, presentations and ad-hoc discussion, dependent upon what kinds of ideas and issues are brought to the table. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level.

For further information, or if you would like to join the storied ranks of Salon presenters, please connect@overlap.org

free music: Miss Ueki – Shake Shake EP
26 Oct 2009, 3:31am +0000 by beatismurder

BEATISMURDER.COM NETLABEL BIM19 – MISS UEKI – SHAKE SHAKE

http://beatismurder.com/netlabel/bim19.html

Miss Ueki are Bernd and Nils from Munich, Germany.
Miss Ueki collect ideas, snap shots, patterns, that eventually evolve into full grown lo-fi pop gems, from version 0.1 to 1.0 and beyond.

Lately, these evolutions led to a fully finished shiny EP.

“Shake Shake” is a triple-A-side-single. Three timid, precious (so called) indietronica hits to shake your heart to. Sloppy but to the point. Professionally amateurish.

For fans of The Notwist, Mùm and Hood. For fans of giant sea monsters. For fans of baby mammals.

Miss Ueki sound like mice.

Attention to bonus material afficionados: contains 3 extra remixes!
