Symbiosis Episode 40 – Segue
30 Dec 2009, 5:35pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

Well it’s 31st December, 2009 in Australia.

Before the light get low and the ales flow,
before the sun goes down on this year and all its memories.
Stop.
Breathe.
And let the moment sink in.
What world do you want to see and hear in 2010?
What do you want to share via Overlap?

May your hope shine and the knowledge that 2010 will bring you what you desire will grow
in your heart.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot… Much love and happy New Year,

Simon

Segue is Jordan Sauer from Vancouver, Canada.

His sound is s minimalist patchwork of textures and tones with a keen ear for the subtle interplay of timbre. These sounds are created through the blending of various instruments (12 and 6 string acoustic guitars, piano, violin, melodica, singing bowls, world instruments, toys etc), and field recordings.

Jordan has numerous releases on netlabels such as Autoplate (Thinner), Kyoto_digital, Sem_IOD, Serein, Silent Season, Qunabu, Resting Bell, Audiotalia, as well as CDR releases on Slow Flow, Tokyo Droning and his own duckbay. Future releases include an ep on Under the Spire and a collaboration with Pleq on Databloem records.

“This mix is based on tracks from my two recent releases on Slow Flow and Tokyo Droning records labels, plus a few samples of works in progress. It provides a snapshot of my approach to composition over the past year or so, slowly moving pieces of shifting sounds and textures. That said, my approach to composition is constantly evolving, but this is a fairly uniform selection of tracks in that they all fit a certain mood and aesthetic. It is very introspective and quite, good for alone time with a cup of tea.

I am amazed at how quickly an international network has formed over the past year or so around a few new net-labels and record labels, driven by a diverse group of truly motivated individuals. I am lucky to have found friends amongst them all, special thanks to Ryo Nakata (who runs Slow Flow Rec) and Ian Hawgood (who runs Home Normal, Tokyo Droning and has his hand in many other projects) for there efforts at bringing everyone together. I am fortunate to have worked with Ryo on the first duckbay records compilation “listen” and Ian will have a track featured on the second compilation, “sing”, due early 2010.

In other news, my next release will be on the wonderful Under the Spire Records in early 2010. It is a short e.p. graciously mastered by Will Long from Celer, which I am very happy with.” – Segue, December 2009

Symbiosis Episode 39 – Kharkov
26 Dec 2009, 9:01pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hi folks,

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and you’re well rested! It was truly a draw between those of you who wanted an ambient mix and those of you who wanted beats this week. So in that spirit I thought this mix would work nicely.

Kharkov (John Bartley) is an electronic artist from Melbourne, Australia. His nom de plume arose in 2005 with his first release, ‘Something Tangible’, on the artist run label, Brother Sister Records.

In 2007 John released his second live instrumental offering ‘Guzheng’ and 2009 has seen Gharkov’s latest release ‘Glitch/Gpace’, a seven-inch, pressed at Peter Kings DIY plant in New Zealand. This release marks a return to his interests in early minimal techno and ambient music.

He has just completed remixes for Anonymeye and Inquiet, and is also working on further remixes for HellosQuare and a collaboration with ii set to come out later in the year.

A full length CD from kharkov will be released mid-2010 on Brother Sister Records.

Symbiosis Episode 39 - Kharkov

“This is a live mix recorded in my studio from a variety of tunes I’ve been listening to recently. The majority are structured around a ‘four on the floor’ pattern.

I find it fascinating how so many people can reinterpret this simple structure in so many different ways! Thirty or so years after disco’s birth it is still an evolving musical form.

I hope you enjoy my mix for Symbiosis.” – Kharkov, December 2009

Symbiosis Episode 38 – Martin Clarke
17 Dec 2009, 3:42am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Symbiosis Episode 38 - Martin Clarke

Martin Clarke is a sound artist, recordist and film maker, based in London.

His work makes extensive use of real-world, environmental material to create semi-abstract non-representational spaces and has been screened, performed, installed and broadcast internationally in concert, at festivals and on radio.

Martin has most recently been working on a film produced during a residency in Garikula, Georgia with artist Alicja Rogalska. Recent projects include The End of History with artist Richard Mosse and Birmingham Sound Matter with Helena Gough, Bobby Bird, Cormac Faulkner, Annie Mahtani, Mark Harris, Nicholas Bullen and Francisco Lopez, released on Audiobulb.

“I’ve been interested in making stative, static pieces for a long time now; places where nothing happens unless you wait, places to simply be.

This piece explores the long-held interest of mine in combining abstract sound material and realistic environmental sound and, something which I’ve been exploring in videos, the idea of simultaneity and multiple threads: here it’s birdsong (I’ve also been recording birdsong for about 7 years, it was time that some of it got more of an outing), and drones (which eventually, sort of reveal their source) all framed by a thunderstorm which lends a real-time structure.

The recordings were made in Wszerzecz, Poland and Skopje, Macedonia between May and September 2009.” – Martin Clarke, November 2009

Symbiosis Episode 37 – Evan Dorrian
10 Dec 2009, 5:45am +0000 by Simon Hampson

“The idea for this podcast is simply “stuff I’m on book-ended by stuff I’ve been listening to”!

Most of the tracks reflect the musical atmosphere I’ve been living in for the past twelve months and the artists/labels that have been influencing me. But there are also a couple of sneaky classics in there too :)

I have been based in Canberra all my life and have been playing drums since I was 12. Over the last few years I have been consumed with a thus far unsuccessful deconstruction of drumset techniques and an obsession with texture. Other than that I also enjoy fat beats.

I’ve released a few things in various formats on the brilliant Canberra based label HellosQuare Recordings over the last 3 years. Including my first solo album that just came out!

The most recent and exciting news is that as of the 2nd of December I will be living and working out of London. Simply to continue creating and exploring music.” – Evan Dorrian, 2009

Recent Releases:

Spartak – Tales From The Colony Room – Ospolitik – Fight Songs EP- Sunstrokes EP – Spartak/John Chantler split 3″ – No Signal EP (HellosQuare)
