Symbiosis Episode 36 – Om Unit
04 Dec 2009, 4:30am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

Posting this week’s podcast a little late. I DJed at the wonderful New Guernica in Melboourne last night with Chris Clark (Warp Records, UK). Sold out gig, great crowd, and some wonderful vibes. Thanks to all the crew who came out. Great to be back on the decks live again after a 6 month break (Djing on the bill with Starkey was my last gig). Look out for a copy of my set in the next few weeks.

This week, Om Unit hits us with a mix full of tech vibes and downtempo influences. This is a journey that is not to be missed – from the subtle groove of Omar S, through the left field hip hop vibes of Flying Lotus, to his very own remix of The Mahavishnu Orchestra.

symbiosisep36_omunit1

Om Unit is the alter ego of Jim 2Tall. He is a long time London DJ who has recently been known for his productions under the name 2tall. His sound as Om Unit fuses all the influences that you hear in this mix, and overlays them on a dubstep/tech template.

I first heard his sounds on Plastician’s great Rinse FM show (his sublime remix of Joker’s ‘Digidesign’ is about to hit wax) and he has an upcoming release on Plastician’s label, Terrorhythm.

Taking it back to the beginning
06 Nov 2009, 2:44pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Blackdown has just posted a great mix by Hatcha from 2002. It’s a celebration of his blog’s 5th Birthday.

It’s an amazing look at a turning point for dubstep and it is packed full of unreleased dubs that will make you move those dancin’ feet.

Symbiosis on Overlap – Episode 32 – Orien
05 Nov 2009, 7:18am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

How’s your week going? Hit me back in the comments this week and tell me where you’re visiting from.. so many people have been connecting from all over the world. It’s great to keep getting your feedback.

This week’s links:

Listening: Will Saul mixes it up for FACT Magazine (including two unreleased Joy Orbison tracks)

Listening: Last month’s Seclusiasis show on Sub FM with Starkey and special guest Plastican

Reading: Where Did All The Ugly Go?

I bought my Remembrance Day poppy this morning. I thought of all the lives that have been given in the name of war – whether political, religious, or social. And you know.. I was thinking about a really important question.. do you know what you stand for?

Symbiosis Episode 32 is a big one! Orien hits us with his first mix in a while.. and he has given it to Symbiosis, for all of you. A big thanks to Orien..

“hi so basicly I done this mix with mostly my own production and a few up & coming releases on my label poizend audio & a few other bits.

I’d say rite now I’m more on an experimental side as the last part of the year it has been just filthy style beats all the way. As the year is coming to an end I’m finding myself a deeper side.

In 2010 I have a few releases lined up on labels such as Dub Police, Poizend Audio, Betamorph, & Ddjs Recordings.

I would like to say a big shout out to all my Dub Police family, Poizend Audio family, Betamorph Family, Pesky Plates family, Fused Forces, every 1 @ Z Audio, Get Darker cru & Beau @ master piece, & shane @ finyl tweek.

I have been out of the scene for I’d say a good 9 months because of illness but im now back on track & ready to hit 2010 dead on!

I would like to say a big thanks to Symbiosis for giving me this opportunity & thanks to every one who has been buying my tunez.

Maximum respect & big up 2 u all!

Add me & follow me & keep up to date with all my work on these websites.”

Symbiosis on Overlap – Episode 30 – Sook
22 Oct 2009, 7:48am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

How are you doing? The last month has been a whirlwind for Overlap, the crew behind the scenes and I. We are still seeing some great responses to Chris McNamara’s release ‘Vague Cities’. Have you checked it out yet?

I have been writing about the many great international artists coming to Australia and working on some A&R for next year’s Overlap releases. We’re also planning our next Overlap Salon in Melbourne on 10th November. Drop me a comment below if you are planning on coming!

So.. on to Episode 30. Australian artist Sook hits us with a mix this week.

Unlike his music up and coming talent Sook is composed of 61% oxygen, 18% carbon and 10% Hydrogen. The elements which make up his body were formed billions of years ago in a star and are certainly much older than he or dubstep is.

Of the remaining 11% of his composition by mass less than 0.01% is Selenium. Although having absolutely nothing to do with his digusting bass driven dancefloor destroying beats, like all multicellular Eukaryotic life forms this element is required in trace amounts for Sook’s cellular function and mediate the effects of specific cellular responses.

It is these cellular responses that allow Sook to have mega-cyber-chrono-dirt-step on the ever filthy Rottun Recordings and disgusting-ultra-funk-dub-tekno beats forthcoming on Rogue Dubs, Stupid fly and Betamorph. Observe Sook’s cellular functionality live at any of a series of interstate gigs in complete symbiosis with his partner in grime boot. The Abyss (Sook & Boot) are heading on an Australian mini tour leading up to the new year including but not exclusive to…

Swagga @ Live (Adelaide) Nov 6th
Pirates vs Ninjas @ Bar Open (Perth) Nov 8th
Hopskotch @ Miss Libertines (Melbourne) Nov 21st
High and Dry Festival @ Wisemans Ferry Nov 27th – Nov 29th

Sook’s clinical mix for Symbiosis on Overlap is fresh from the lab and a taste of what to expect club/warehaus/research facility near you!

Symbiosis on overlap – Episode 27 – Asa
27 Sep 2009, 4:49pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Ambitious emotive music to sink your teeth and ears into, Asa’s “Catch You” and KOAN sound’s remix see’s two tunes combine haunting piano and vocals with deep subs and rolling beats. The originals Spacious melancholy resonance will leave you wanting more and this comes in the form of the remix which delivers a darker more dancefloor oriented edge. Symbiosis on overlap – Episode 26 – Phaeleh
15 Sep 2009, 2:47pm +0000 by Simon Hampson

Phaeleh (pronounced “fella”) hits us with an urgent, attention grabbing, mix this week. His distinct sound fuses the dark and heavy sounds of Dubstep and Drum and Bass with the melodies and soundscapes of Electronica, all sealed together with the subtle textures of acousmatic music. But he doesn’t want you to think about that whilst you dance.. This mix is from the heart and was recorded after a long night out, straight to disk!

Phaeleh’s diverse range of influences gives him an equally diverse musical output which can range from disturbing bass lines and heavy Dubstep/Jungle beats, perfect for the rave, to the more soulful, restrained tracks incorporating a variety of sound sources and vocal styles.

In 2008 he started Urban Scrumping Records and continues to gig regularly across the UK and Europe…

Symbiosis on overlap – Episode 23 – Sines
27 Aug 2009, 3:43am +0000 by Simon Hampson

Hey folks,

A heavy week this week with the passing of Ted Kennedy. A few articles I have been reading this week:

Performance rights and radio in America over at Ars Technica

The Placebo effect and drugs

and on the music side of things check out this great mix by Scuba over at mnml ssgs and a few articles:

The month in bass at FACT magazine

20 best post-rock at FACT magazine

and Martin Clark’s “Greatest Rhythms In Dubstep Part 1″

Some stuff for you all to go on with whilst you listen to this week’s mix!

Sines hit us this week with an all vinyl, all Garage mix!!

Straight outta the dirty South, Texas, Sines (Leroy Bella & Joseph Isla) have quickly become not just one of the busiest duos in stateside dubstep, but also one with an eye for talent.

Responsible for Formant Recordings and a host of parties (incuding Gritsy, their monthly night in Houston), Sines has spent as much time developing the talents of others as they have polishing their own low-down and diverse sounds; just peep some of the names gracing Formant wax to see who they’ve got next in the global scene.

Wilfully switching sounds and timbres, Sines are equally happy creating dirty garage-influenced rollers as they are twisting accapellas into sub bass workouts.

The defining theme in their work is passion and style, no matter what the project is.

Forthcoming Releases:

Digital: 20Twelve Recordings-My Life Ep-Aug 25th
Digital: NightAudio002-Various Artist Ep-Memories are Here- Oct 09

Current Releases:
