We really appreciate all of your support over the last few years of experimentation and growth.
Thank You !

Tom Hall – “Past Present, Below”
“Past Present, Below” is the accumulation of 2 years of experimentation, bringing together a vast array of instrumentation (drums, guitar, piano, organ, virbraphone, chinese gongs and harmonia) and field recordings (Australia, Kyoto temples, German rivers, Tasmanian forests). Hall ties these varied sources together with a unique blend of studio practices ranging from Max / Ableton Live processing, analog effects pedals and a unique process of replaying and re-recording compositions back into environments in which they originated. This album is Tom Hall’s most developed and beautiful work to date, exclusive to Overlap.

Bio
Tom Hall is a media artist based in Brisbane, Australia. He processes and manipulates found sound and instruments with both computer-based processing (Ableton Live, Max/Msp/Jitter) and analog manipulation with creative hardware configurations. The pieces created during these experiments are then composed linearly and further manipulated by re-recording the sounds through homemade reverb chambers, resonant locations, and analog tape manipulation.
Hall’s work combines geography and earth, a sense of place and time and moment of the recordings he uses, with gentle musical gestures that emerge naturally through the recursive processing. Tom creates a swell of sonic memories gracefully touched by supporting instruments and tools.

New Release – Electricwest – “Detach”
23 Mar 2010, 9:20am +0000 by overlap

Overlap is very happy to release Electricwest’s newest work – “Detach”

Electricwest is Patrick Benolkin, a diverse and prolific producer from Boise, Idaho. With a tip to the more electronic sides of Warp records and Ghostly International, Electricwest creates soulful and crystal-sharp experimental electronic gems. In 2006, Electricwest made some Overlap-related waves by winning a Creative Commons (CC) remix contest of Christopher Willits’ track “Colors Shifting” which was featured by Ghostly International and CC. Since then Benolkin has surfed an explosion of activity, releasing six albums via his Electricwest and Eluder monikers. “Detach” is Electricwest’s newest and most concise statement to date.

You can listen to the entire album below, and buy to support Overlap and Electricwest :

Overlap releases welcome Luke Peugeot !
22 Feb 2010, 11:19am +0000 by Willits

For a while now I’ve needed a hand with managing all of the ideas and logistics of Overlap releases and publishing, and I’ve finally found the man. Luke recently finished a music business degree, brings expertise in publishing and releasing music, has a passion for new ways of doing things (we dig), + he is just a super awesome guy.
We’re very happy to have him as a part of the team.
Welcome Luke !

After much deliberation, Luke and I are putting the final touches on the next wave of Overlap releases.
This spring a new cycle begins, and we’ll be bringing more beautiful experimental music to all of you.

As always, thanks so much for the continued support of Overlap and the art experiment you are all a part of.

Overlap.org Releases “Vague Cities” by Chris McNamara + Announces Upcoming Overlap Salon SF
06 Oct 2009, 12:39pm +0000 by rejon

For Immediate release – 6 October 2009 – San Francisco

Curated by Jeff Owens from Ghostly International, Overlap presents Chris McNamara. Echoes from the Windsor-Detroit techno scene modulate off Lake St. Clair and emerge into the sound forms of “Vague Cities”. McNamara’s muffled beats, gentle harmonies, and light-like shimmering textures envelope you wholly, while creating a space to breathe and be.

Chris McNamara is a Windsor ON. / Ann Arbor-based video artist, writer, DJ, new media instructor, and founding member of Thinkbox (http://thinkbox.ca), a label/collective that currently includes Christopher Bissonnette (Kranky), Steve Roy, Rob Theakston, Bill Van Loo and Mark Laliberte. Chris spent much of the last decade making sounds and moving images for both live performance and for museum and festival settings. He has shown his work in numerous festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Ann Arbor Film Festival and the Independent Film Festival of Boston. His multi-media installations have been exhibited in a number of settings including Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Zurich, Berlin and most recently in Plymouth, UK. Chris’ latest projects are nospectacle (a live pa/dj group with Walter Wasacz and Jennifer Paull) in Detroit and Noiseborder – a new music ensemble based in Windsor, ON.

This release marks Overlap and Ghostly International’s first release collaboration. Jeff Owens, Label Manager for Ghostly International, passed along Chris McNamara’s work to Overlap founder Christopher Willits and both agreed it needed to be heard. “Chris’ compositions are precise while patterns slowly emerge and build upon each other to create a rewarding listen to patient ears. It reminds me of snowy Detroit winters or watching a person’s daily experience with public transportation slowed down to a more manageable pace and that everything is going to be ok…,” said Jeff Owens. Overlap.org’s founder, Christopher Willits said, “Chris McNamara’s ‘Vague Cities’ is Overlap’s first curatorial collaboration with another label. A big beautiful welcome to our diverse catalog of media growing at Overlap, Chris McNamara creates the sound feeling of an early morning post-rave bliss.”
